Bent Plow Farm

Who are the farmers at Bent Plow Farm?
Emma Sowiak, Scott Humphries, and Julie Fletcher

What do you grow?
A wide range of delicious vegetables!

Where are you located?
Blewett, British Columbia

How would you describe your company?
We are a 1.5 acre mixed fruit & vegetable operation located in the sunny oasis of Blewett only 15 km from Nelson. We sell at market, wholesale, and through our CSA-box delivery program. You can find us at both the Wednesday & Saturday markets in Nelson.

How long have you been farming?
We have been farming since 2014 and since 2018 in the West Kootenays.

What motivated you to start?
I think at its core, we want to do good in the world. Growing local organic food seems like a good place to start.

What are some of your greatest joys?
We are so lucky to be able to work and live in this beautiful region. Farming in the mountains brings it’s fair share of challenges, but the beauty and the community give back to us in so many ways. It’s a joy to grow our own food and food for our friends and neighbours; it’s a great privilege.

What are some of your greatest challenges?
I think our biggest challenge is learning to grow in a changing climate. Adapting to the weather has always been a farmers’ challenge, but as the seasonal and yearly differences become more extreme our job only gets harder and we have to find more innovative ways to adapt our growing practices.

What is your vision for your farm?
Our goal is to provide high-quality produce for our community, while managing the land and our ecological impact with thought and care. For us, organic agriculture is not simply the lack of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, but a holistic approach that encompasses: building and feeding the soil, encouraging a diversity of wildlife and pollinators, minimizing and off-setting our carbon footprint, and helping to preserve our watershed and natural spaces.

Why is local food and/or local purchasing important to you?
When you support local food, you also support any vendor that we spend our money at. Farm supplies, market supplies, or taking ourselves out for a beer or dinner – a lot of our money is going directly back into the community. By supporting local food, you are supporting a whole host of other local business – including the co-op!

If you could deliver a message directly to Co-op members/customers, what would it be?
Thank you for choosing to purchase local. We don’t care if it’s with us or one of the other great farms in the area. Not only are you getting the best in-season, nutrient-dense produce, you are supporting small, local, family businesses; allowing them to improve their soil and land as well as enhancing regional food security.
