Forrest Farm

Amanda and Ewan Forrest are the caring stewards of Forrest Farm in Salmo BC. They raise a colourful mix of beloved animals including free range quail, and they have recently begun supplying the Co-op with these lovely speckled eggs. With animal health and well-being at the forefront of their farming philosophy, we are proud to be carrying Forrest Farm products here at the Kootenay Co-op.

Who are the farmers at Forrest Farm?
Amanda and Ewan Forrest.

How would you describe your farm?
Our beautiful little 8 acre farm is located in friendly Salmo BC. The farm was originally an old Doukhobor homestead and pasture that had gone unused for many years. Since we purchased the property in 2014, we have been working diligently to bring new life to the already fertile land.

We are a small mixed farm with a focus on animal health and well-being. Our animals live a happy stress-free life and the quality of care is shown in their eggs and meat. We do not use pesticides or chemical fertilizers in our garden or pasture.

What do you grow?
Free range quail eggs, pasture raised chicken eggs, grass fed lamb, natural Icelandic and East Friesan wool, seasonal vegetables from our half acre market garden, handmade goat milk soap, and pasture raised Pekin duck!

Our quail eggs are one of the first products that we have in large enough quantity to sell to stores, and we are excited to launch them at the Co-op.

We are so happy to have your quail eggs here too! What made you want to raise Quail?
They are irresistibly cute to start with!

Their smaller size suits the smaller carrying capacity of our farm very well because they require less space than larger livestock. They are hard little workers for their size though, beginning to lay eggs much earlier than chickens. They are a great animal to round out our farm system.

In general, we wanted to do something a little bit differently when we began our farm; to find niche products that weren’t currently offered locally. Quail eggs were a natural fit.

Its true, we have not had quail eggs available for years, and many members are excited to see them back! What type of Quail do you raise?
We raise Coturnix quail and they lay a lovely little speckled egg that is robin-egg blue on the inside of the shell. They make adorable little hard-boiled eggs and are delicious in all sorts of recipes.

Our quail are raised with lots of space and are completely cage free.  We keep them safe from predators in a large covered outdoor pen. With 6ft of flight clearance, they love to bounce around and fly all over the place.

How long have you been farming?
This is our 4th year on the farm.

What motivated you to start?
We do not have a family history in farming, but a passion for the environment and a love for animals led us to this challenging new adventure.

What are some of your greatest joys?
Lambing season is the greatest time of the year!!!! Working with all the animals brings us a lot of joy.

What is your vision for your farm?
At Forrest Farm we aim to give our poultry and livestock the best life possible, while producing high quality food to feed ourselves and our local community.

Why is local food and/or local purchasing important to you?
Purchasing local is the best way to support the growth of your local economy. Also shopping local is much easier on the environment.

If you could deliver a message directly to Co-op members/customers, what would it be?
I would like to thank every member for their support.
