Nuts 4 U Granola

Nuts 4 U Granola is made with your health in mind. Back in 2015, Gina Griffiths, owner of Nuts 4 U, switched to a grain-free diet. The one food she really missed was granola… she just couldn’t find a satisfactory alternative — grain free granola that’s tasty and affordable. So she decided to make it herself and put it on the market! And boy, oh boy, are we ever glad she did.

Who is the granola maker?
Gina Griffiths

Where are you located?
Winlaw, BC

What do you make?
I make a nut- and seed- based granola/snack food that’s completely grain-free, gluten-free, dairy-free and soy-free, made with simple organic ingredients. There are five flavours, to suit every palate:

  • Coconut Almond
  • Apricot Almond
  • Apple Cinnamon
  • Peanut Butter Chocolate
  • Unsweetened Muesli

How would you describe your company?
I wanted to have an impact on the foods we fill our bellies with. I wanted to create a healthy alternative for health-conscious people.  And I wanted to do it with simple organic ingredients. We’re a small scale operation and we work hard to source out local ingredients and build good relationships with other local suppliers.

How long have you been in business?
I started out on January 25, 2016.

An exact date, even! That must have been a momentous day… starting your own business. What motivated you to take the entrepreneurial leap?
I wanted to be my own boss… And I think I needed a challenge. I sure got one! I have learned a lot along the way, but I’m glad I took the “leap,” as you say.

I’m sure everyone who has tasted your granola is glad, too! What are some of your greatest joys?
I love seeing customers’ reactions when they try our product because they didn’t expect it to taste so good!

On the flip side, what are some of your greatest challenges?
Oh, the usual challenges faced by small businesses:

  • marketing our new product
  • standing out against the competition, and
  • trying to find a balance between business and life.

What would you say is your vision for your company?
We want to make customers happy and in doing so, build up a well-established business in the Kootenays.

Why is local food important to you?
It’s so important to know where your food comes from. And when you shop local, you’re helping your community grow by creating more employment and more localized income (and therefore more local spending, and around and around it goes!). The other bonus is not having to wonder how much fuel it took for your food to get to your table.

If you could deliver a message directly to Co-op shoppers, what would it be?
Thank you for all your support! Without you, small businesses like mine would have a hard time surviving.

As an added bonus to readers of this blog interview, here’s an awesome way to enjoy Nuts 4 U Granola.

On-the-Go Parfait

This recipe is such a great idea and what makes it even better is that it’s totally customizable! Switch out the strawberries for whatever fruit or berry is in seasonal abundance. Keep it dairy free with the Yoso, or use your personal favourite yogurt. You could even choose to add additional nuts and seeds, although I doubt you’ll need to if Nuts 4 U is your granola of choice! Sprouted Health’s “Dairy Free Berry Breakfast Parfait” that happens to be gluten free/grain free, too!

  • 1/2 Cup of Vanilla Yoso Cultured Coconut Yogurt
  • 1/3 Cup of fresh strawberries, washed and diced
  • 1/3 Cup of granola of your choice
  • 1-2 Tbsp. of hemp seeds (hearts)
  • 1 Tsp. of chia seeds

Spoon your yogurt into the bottom of a half-pint sized mason jar. Add the diced strawberries, followed by the granola, hemp and chia seeds. Layering the ingredients in this order will ensure your granola doesn’t go soggy overnight. Place the lid on the jar and store in the fridge for up to 1 day.
