The Pie Revolution has begun! Our very own Reuben Crookbain (assistant Butcher Shop manager extraordinaire) makes his delicious New Zealand Style savory pies in Winlaw. Reuben missed the iconic meat pies from his Kiwi homeland and set out to make a local version using local meat and organic ingredients. He has created vegetarian and vegan varieties too. Pie Revolution’s pastry is irresistibly flaky and the authentic flavours are habit forming. Try them yourself and join the revolution!

Where are you located?
We make our pies in the Slocan Valley at The Valley Kitchen in Winlaw.
What do you make?
We make New Zealand-style savoury pies and have both meat and vegetarian options. They can be baked and either eaten on a plate as a sit-down meal, or held in your hand to eat.
How would you describe your company?
We are very proud of the fact that we make our pies using high quality natural ingredients. We use organic flour and natural ingredients and seasonings in all our pies.
We have close relationships with our meat and egg suppliers and use a lot of local farms. Cutter Ranch (Fort Steele) supplies our pork and bacon, Tarzwell Farms (Creston) and Blue Goose Organic Cattle Company (South Cariboo) supply our beef, Yarrow Meadows (Chilliwack) supply organic chicken, and we buy our eggs from Sunshine Valley Organics in Creston.
Our aim is to make delicious savoury pies available to the people of the Kootenays.
How long have you been farming/in business?
Pie Revolution initially started 4 and a half years ago in Edmonton, had a break for 3 years and has been in operation in the Slocan Valley for the last 6 months.
What motivated you to start?
Being a Kiwi, pies were a big part of my life! When I moved to Canada I found that I really missed having them available. I tried the types of pies available in Canada (usually chicken pot pies) but they never satisfied my cravings for what they were like back in New Zealand. I knew a lot of people who were either from NZ or had traveled there who missed pies too. I started making pies for myself and friends and that was how the pie revolution began.
What are some of your greatest joys?
Biting into a freshly baked pie, the delicious flaky pastry and tasty filling, makes me very happy. The feedback from customers who tell me that they love the pies and that having an easy lunch or dinner ready to go is wonderful for them.
What are some of your greatest challenges?
Finding somewhere suitable to make the pies. Thankfully, the Valley Kitchen commercial rental kitchen in Winlaw exists not far from home and is the perfect base for Pie Revolution.
What is your vision for your company?
To continue to grow and develop more flavours plus a gluten free line of pies. I would also love to have these pies available hot out of the oven for customers.
