Read on to find out what other nurturing profession led Judi to farming. FUN FACT: She and her husband, Alex Berland, are founding members of the Co-op.

Who is the farmer at Tulaberry in Passmore, BC?
Judi Morton

And what do you do?
We grow a full market garden along with raspberries. We also have chickens, both layers and meat birds, as well as pigs and beef cows.

How would your describe your operation?
I have been practicing organic farming techniques for other 40 years and have always believed that what we do matters for both ourselves and our environment.

How long have you been farming?
We bought our land in 1968, but didn’t start farming in any meaningful fashion until 1997.

What motivated you to start?
The motivation came when I was retiring from being a Registered Nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at BC Children’s Hospital. I just wanted to get my hands back into the Earth.

What are some of your greatest joys?
Being able to feed my family, friends and the wider community with beautiful organic food makes me incredibly happy and proud.

What are some of your greatest challenges?
Getting old! I’m 69 years old and farming on this scale is not getting easier, but my will to farm organically is still just as strong.

What’s your vision for your business?
We would love to find and mentor the next generation of farmer, so that all the productivity we have cultivated on our property doesn’t go to waste. Also, our blueberry bushes are maturing, so soon we will have blueberries too (if the little ones on the farm don’t eat them all!)!

And why is local food important to you?
I believe that food security is going to be more and more of a concern, so having the agricultural infrastructure to ensure we continue to eat well is paramount.

If you could deliver a message directly to Co-op members, what would it be?
Thank you for choosing to buy organic and help us and other organic farmers not just do what we love, but what is best for the land.
