Community Grant Recipients

November 2024

The ambitious people driving the organizations and initiatives in our community are a constant source of inspiration. We are forever grateful to live, work + play in a place where so many folks are invested in making change happen! As members, your continued support helps strengthen our community, contributing to the success of these incredible initiatives and projects.

Each quarter your Kootenay Co-op gives out four grants valued up to $500 for projects or initiatives that help strengthen and support our local community. This November we were able to give out $2,000 in community grants to these amazing community projects!

Argenta Community Association

The Argenta Fall Faire Standing Committee is a subcommittee of the Argenta Community Association. They aim to provide space for folks to gather, form community bonds, and have a good time at different community focused events throughout the year!

The Argenta Yuletide Market is the annual Christmas market hosted at the Argenta Community Hall. The Argenta Yuletide Market includes a vendors market where individuals and small businesses are invited to sell, and attendees are invited to support our local economy. There is food served out of the Argenta Hall kitchen, music is played by a local pianist, and there is a kids craft station, where kids get to make paper lanterns to bring home. After the market, there is the community favourite square dance!

Kootenay Rhythm Dragons

Kootenay Rhythm Dragons began as a team of breast cancer survivor and supporters and this year celebrated their 20th anniversary by giving over $2000 to the Women’s Centre and Nelson Friends of The Family. They are a small nonprofit group with a small operating budget and a membership of about 60 women from all walks of life.

This grant will be used to fund the purchase of a market tent, used to give give the team shade when they compete and at many local events such as the Polka Dot Dragon Lantern Festival, Canada Day, Nelson Pride, and others.

Lardeau Valley LINKS Society

Founded 2010, Lardeau Valley Opportunity LINKS Society is a community organization that links individuals, businesses, groups and organizations throughout the Lardeau Valley. Their goal is to provide support to community members so that they may continue to thrive in the Lardeau Valley. LINKS works to advance the economic, social and environmental well-being of Lardeau Valley residents. Through developing community connection, and amplifying the voices of Lardeau Valley’s, LINKS helps to build a cohesive and vibrant community.

The goal of the Argenta Community Workshop is to promote a culture of values and skills, and provide services, related to repairing, making and sharing the items we use. They operate a facility in Argenta that is a repair cafe, a makerspace, a tool and small equipment lending library, and a space to run workshops in these realms – available to the public in the Lardeau Valley.

South Slocan & Area Childcare Society

South Slocan and Area Childcare Society operates a daycare called Wee Ones Early Learning Centre in Crescent Valley. Wee Ones Daycare has continuously operated in South Slocan since 1987 and with a new team of teachers, board members and students it’s time to update the educational toys to bring the very best to our smallest community members.
