February Board Blog

written by Maggie Jones, Board Member

Thank you for reading our Board Blog, a synopsis of our most recent board meeting and other board-related information.

Your board is responsible for overseeing our General Manager (GM), ensuring financial viability, providing governance that is in line with the BC Coops Act and making strategic decisions that benefit our Co-op. We have five board committees that meet monthly and then share reports and recommendations to the board as a whole. These committees are: HR/Hiring, Governance, Finance, Member Engagement, and Nominations. We also hear reports monthly from our GM and one department manager.

February 2023

Your board met February 17, 2023.

We heard and discussed reports from board committees:

  • Our Member Engagement Committee presented their Terms of Reference and received board approval for this document. The blog format has been finalized and will launch soon.
  • Our 2023 Nominations committee has begun their work and this year there are 2 seats up for election. Our employee director is also up for election. Please watch for information about running for your board!

Our IGMs made their report to the board.

Our department of the month was the Butcher Shop and we were given a very interesting and detailed report about the inner workings of this busy department:

  • Manager, Reuben Crookbain, reported that the butcher shop sources as much local meat as possible. Some challenges have arisen because two local suppliers have closed recently, including the local chicken farm and abattoir, Chuckeresse, in Creston. Reuben hopes that a new year-round True Local chicken supplier will be found in the future, but with input costs rising considerably and other market challenges, this is a complicated issue for suppliers.
  • Reuben reported that the butcher shop currently does a great job of meeting our members’ needs. Lamb is the only product that the shop runs low on.
  • We learnt that the off- site smoker is performing very well with delicious house-made smoked products leading sales growth in this department.

See you next time!
