Governing the Co-op

Written by Cathy-Ann Glockner and the Member Engagement Committee

At the helm of our Co-op ship works a group of dedicated volunteers who are your Board of Directors.

We are driven by the mission, vision, and values of this Cooperative.

Being part of this dynamic team is such a fulfilling experience.  As spring is in the air (albeit somewhat early this year!) our thoughts go towards the recruitment of candidates  for the 3 board positions that will be elected before the fall AGM.

This past year has found our team of directors deeply involved with strategic planning for the future of our amazing organization.  Policies have been reviewed and revised, events have been planned and attended and our GM recruitment is underway.  Our team has been sharing time and ideas with other Co-op organizations as well as helping with community events, such as providing hot drinks during the Coldest Night of the Year walk and celebrating Earth Day on April 22nd in front of our store.

Throughout our terms as Board members we have been gaining and sharing many valuable skills.  Keeping open to numerous ideas, we strive to communicate in a mindful and calm manner. The passion and commitment that each member brings to the group helps to create a strong and focused vision for our Co-op.

At present, our Board is made up of seven dedicated individuals which will be increased to eight for the upcoming term.  While we are looking for people with experience in areas such as finance, retail business, law, HR, leadership, or the natural food industry, we always need people who are open minded, and are able to put the good of the whole over their individual preferences. We need people who are mindful of the impact of Board decisions and who are willing to learn and grow as times and circumstances change. Our Board needs directors who are deeply committed to our goals to be of value to the community, and to operate in ways that are beneficial to the planet.

If any of this speaks to you, please visit this page for more information about nominations.

Joining the Co-op Board is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the governance and success of a local cooperative business. Whether your contribution is shown through shopping here, or whether you are considering standing for election, the Kootenay Co-op Board would like to thank you for your part in helping us support our community and our planet.
