Wild Onion Nutburgers

These burgers are a Kootenay vegetarian’s dream-come-true. They’re made locally, are high in protein and are packed with walnuts, which are known for their omega-3 content (anti-inflammatory!), for their amino acids (good for the heart!), for an abundance of antioxidants (immunity-boosting!), and for their neuroprotective compounds (enhances brain health!). Whoa… what a mouthful. A yummy, healthy, feel-good mouthful.

Who is the processor at Wild Onion Nutburgers?
Linda Kassels

Where are you located?
Rossland, BC

What do you make?
Three unique flavours of vegetarian Nutburgers. Original, Rosemary Rye, and Gluten Free.

How would you describe your operation?
Wild Onion Nutburgers is a small family-owned and -operated business based out of Rossland. Our delicious vegetarian burgers come in three flavors: Original, Rosemary Rye and Gluten Free. The high quality ingredients we use are sourced as locally as possible.

How long have you been in business?
I bought the business from Erin Morrison in 2014.

Erin Morrison works at the Co-op now! We love having her on our team. According to Erin, the walnuts in Wild Onion Nutburgers “make you more attractive! NO, really… it’s the oils, they really make you prettier!” What motivated you to start?
We moved to the Kootenays in 2009 and were looking for an opportunity to make a living in the area that would match our lifestyle. Our little family is always in the kitchen trying to cook up delicious vegetarian meals so something in foods seemed like a logical choice. When Wild Onion Nutburgers crossed our path, we figured it was a great fit.

What are some of your greatest joys?
Positive customer feedback during demos or good reviews online give me a kick. There are always people telling me how they love the burgers and what their favourite flavour is.

What is your vision for your company?
Wild Onion Nutburgers will stay small and honest. We have no desire to become much bigger, but there is a desire to become better. New healthy products are on our wishlist and have been tested on friends who give us great feedback, so stay tuned for more nutty foods! We also want to contribute to the local economy by providing fair employment opportunities. Currently, we have one wonderful part time employee.

Why is local food and/or local purchasing important to you?
We feel very strongly about buying local. The consumer-producer relationships we have are what keep us going. We have solid and friendly relationships with our suppliers.
In our private lives, we make every reasonable effort to buy local produce, products and arts. Knowing the people behind the purchase you make gives a great deal of connection. Farmers’ markets, local grocers, coffee shops and galleries are our favourites.

If you could deliver a message directly to Co-op members/customers, what would it be?
Thank you for your continuous support and wonderful feedback.
