Rouvé Hembling wanted to find fulfilling work that could keep her home with her children, while contributing to a worthwhile cause. These two ideas came together when she started her own small business, My Green Kitchen. Her products, like fabric bowl covers and reusable produce bags, help people to reduce plastic waste.

How would you describe your company?
Small business with a big heart for making beautiful things that can help you to reduce plastic waste. Reducing our footprint on this beautiful area we call home is so important to us.
How long have you been in business?
What motivated you to start?
I was looking for something to make and do that could keep me home with my kids but was still a worthwhile cause with a bit of an income. It has grown so much and so fast, and I really feel like it is making a difference. A blessing to me in so many ways.
What are some of your greatest joys?
Creating. I love making stuff and it is a bonus that others can enjoy my work, and still being able to be flexible for my children and work from home is just added bonus!
What are some of your greatest challenges?
Finding good quality materials and supplies, I live far away from big centers so finding even basic things are sometimes challenging.
What is your vision for your farm/company?
I hope to keep growing my business and having great alternatives to plastic available to more people.
Why is local food and/or local purchasing important to you?
It supports our local economy, it creates jobs for people that live around Nakusp so that we all can continue to live in this beautiful town.
If you could deliver a message directly to Co-op members/customers, what would it be?
Make small changes all the time, it leads to big changes, small changes makes a difference.
Is there anything you would like to add?
I’m originally from South Africa, I have 2 girls that are passionate about skiing! We moved to Nakusp thinking we most probably would live here for a short time, and we have been here for 7 years now! We just love everything about this area.
