Little Dragon Medicinals

Kendra Starr has been a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine for over twenty years and she designed Little Dragon Medicinals with quality, effectiveness, and great taste in mind. Based on experience with her own children’s aversion to icky tasting medicines, Kendra set out to make wholesome, preventative remedies that are delicious and super family friendly! Handcrafted in Nelson and inspired by active Kootenay lifestyles, Little Dragon Medicinals aims to help people feel their best and keep moving in our beautiful outdoors!

We are very grateful to Kendra for her great medicinals and also for the leaps she has taken to get them onto store shelves. In recent years Health Canada has strengthened requirements for licensing of natural health products. While this has been good for consumer confidence, it has made it much more challenging for small local producers to reach retail shelves and has limited some of our sourcing options at the Kootenay Co-op. A huge thank you to Kendra for scaling all the regulatory hurdles and making these great locally crafted remedies readily available to all of us! We Kootenay-ites are so very lucky to have talented and tenacious suppliers like Kendra amongst us!

Who is the creator at Little Dragon Medicinals?
Kendra Starr, Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Where are you located?
Nelson BC!

What do you make?
We make high quality, effective herbal remedies, based on historical Traditional Chinese Medicine…that taste good!

Little Dragon Medicinals aim to heal life’s little imbalances. Our mission is simple: to make medicine that is safe, easy and fun. I want to empower people to keep themselves feeling their best.

Deep and restful sleep is the wellspring of a healthy heart, mind and soul. Dream is based on an ancient TCM formula called Suan Zao Ren Tang, a formula that balances the body and nourishes the spirit and soul – freeing you from insomnia, restlessness and irritability. Fall asleep easily, and relish in the deep and peaceful slumber that Dream brings.

Firewall Immune: We all have a firewall to protect our computers from a virus , this formula is a firewall for your body. It is a very gentle but effective formula which strengthens your body’s protective energy. Firewall can be taken whenever you feel a little run down or when your immune system might be facing extra challenges, i.e.. someone in your vicinity has a cold. This combination of herbs helps you get over a cold quickly and easily.

If you have a sore throat or runny, stuffed nose – it is time for Aachoo. This formulation is to help sooth the lungs when there are symptoms of cough. Not only does it sooth the throat and lungs it also expands the lung and brings lung energy down which is the natural, healthy direction of lung energy. Upsurging lung energy is what creates the symptom of cough.

What motivated you to start?
I have been a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 20 years. I wanted to use my knowledge to help my kids but all the medicines tasted so bad that they wouldn’t take them! So I started to develop formulas that work really well, are of high quality, but also taste great.

The wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine is ancient but the concept is new. We have added a modern little twist by putting Little Dragon Medicinals in a dropper with a liquid glycerin base. The dropper bottle makes them easy to carry and use, while the glycerin eliminates the need for alcohol and gives the natural remedies a delicious and slightly sweet taste. One of the main advantages of glycerine is that it doesn’t affect blood sugar, so I could feel good about giving my children a product that tasted sweet without all the nasty side effects of sugar.

What are some of your greatest joys?
I love inventing and creating new formulas, but my greatest joy is hearing people’s success stories of how they didn’t catch the cold going around, or how quickly they felt better. “My daughter had an itchy throat on our walk, I gave her firewall immediately, and several more times throughout the day. Sure enough, she didn’t end up sick. Strong herbs, strong bodies.”

What are some of your greatest challenges?
My biggest challenge is having patience with the process. Licensing health products and sourcing the best quality herbs takes a lot of time. It has taken me three years to get to this stage of being able to put formulas on the shelves.

What is your vision for Little Dragon Medicinals?
My vision is to provide a go-to for families to keep themselves going strong.

Why is local food and/or local purchasing important to you?
Local food is so important to me because I know that the vitality available in each bite totally depends on the way food is grown, how it is harvested, and where it comes from. Local means less time between harvest and my table, which I totally appreciate. Also eating local food means supporting our local community and local farmers.

If you could deliver a message directly to Co-op members/customers, what would it be?
Thank you so much for the warm welcome to your store!

My message to Co-op customers would be to give Little Dragon Medicinals a try. I designed them to be effective, easy to take and good tasting.  I see Co-op members as a conscious group of people who have tried many health products and I know they will find these to be a helpful part of their daily health repertoire.

Be happy and healthy, every day. That’s our wish to you. That’s what Little Dragon Medicinals is all about.
