Chocolate bars made with Mayan grown cacao, coconut sugar, and superfoods. All products are vegan, gluten-free, and made with organic and ethically sourced ingredients.
How would you describe your company?
We produce delicious high-quality chocolate using superfoods and ethical alchemy with cacao sourced from cooperatives that value human well-being, better living conditions and environmental sustainability. We strive to source all ingredients and packaging in the most ethical and sustainable methods possible and take the extra step to use recycled paper, compostable bags, and consciously think through each part of the business. It’s chocolate you can feel good about.
How long have you been in business?
I began crafting chocolate as Belicious in 2013 and just launched Viva Cacao this year.
What motivated you to start?
I was inspired by a lack of what I wanted on the market in Canada. I had a desire to create a higher quality product and to share the heart-opening medicine of cacao with others.
What inspired your new brand, Viva Cacao?
Over the 6 years that I have been in business I have been growing and learning continually. It became clear that the brand was much more than the name Belicious could contain.
I have been hard at work for the past two years to transform and recreate the business to embody what I truly value. I wanted a brand that represented the mindful intention that I strive for in sourcing from sustainable, eco-conscious, and fairly traded ingredients and packaging. Viva Cacao is a celebration of cacao and the incredible farmers who have cultivated it. And it’s a celebration of flavour, health, and life.

What are some of your greatest joys?
I love doing tastings and getting positive reactions from people about the product. It has truly kept me going through the years and continues to be the reason I am still in business. I enjoy traveling to other parts of BC to do demos and meeting retailers around the province because it combines my love of adventure with work. I also enjoy meeting, sharing business tips, and networking with fellow entrepreneurs and chocolate makers.
What are some of your greatest challenges?
The learning curve of running a small business and managing it all on my own has been greatly challenging as well as empowering. I have come a long way from when I started but there is so much to learn and keep up with, especially in the computer realm. Training and figuring out what I can delegate to others has been a process and as I continue to grow will become essential to success.
What is your vision for your company?
To expand throughout BC and possibly nationally. I am starting to grow and get my product out to more people. I would love to grow the business large enough to really make an impact for the farmers who grow the cacao. My greatest vision would be to make enough to donate to socially responsible causes.
Why is local food and/or local purchasing important to you?
Local food is so important to lessen our impact on the environment and support our local economy. Although most of my ingredients cannot be sourced locally because of our climate, I strive to find ways to support local businesses and companies that align with my business practices. I purchase my packaging from a BC supplier and want to create more products that incorporate local ingredients. I also trade often with local farmers and artisans and network with other producers for transportation and sourcing.
